Memorial Day is a holiday where we remember the people who died in active military service. Memorial Day is celebrated the last Monday of May, but it used to just be on May 30. Memorial Day was created on April 25, 1866 when a group of ladies decorated graves from the Civil War, it then became a Federal holiday on May 30, 1971. Memorial Day wasn’t originally called Memorial Day though it used to be called Decoration Day, because of the ladies decorating the graves, but now it is called Memorial Day because we are remembering the soldiers that died in active military duty.
Memorial Day is important because of all the people who die for our freedom so we can live the way that we do. So, we remember the people for all of their sacrifice. If these people didn’t risk their lives America wouldn’t be a free country.  There would be barely any freedom and our country would be ruled by someone who could be greedy and selfish. That is why Memorial Day is important, to remember all those sacrifices to keep this country free.
