Being on a team can be a big deal to some people. I decided to ask one of the captains of the Pierce Middle School Step Team, Pi Psi Sigma, a few questions about their experience being a captain.  Jayda Lovett is one of the Pierce’s step team captains.  She is captain along with Bianca Freeman and Bianca Riley.  Jayda joined the step team to become more social and to be apart of something. One of her favorite parts of being a on the step team is learning new steps and talking with her team and  joking around.

A  typical practice at step would be the captain teaching the other members on the team the routine and everyone going over what they already know. Jayda believes that one thing that is holding the team back is some of the members talking during practice or some peoples learning pace. Some people goof around when they should be learning the routine. Also, some people take a little longer to learn so having to catch up is something that happens sometimes.

Jayda has been doing step since the 7th grade. She is now in 8th grade which means she has been doing step for over a year. The coach, Mrs. Raiford, expects everyone including the captains to stay focused and practice the routine until we do as good as we can. The motivation our team has is just to have fun and see people enjoy our dance. Some advice that Jayda has for future step team members is to always just do your best. Don’t treat Step like it’s a job or something you just have to get done with… have fun!.

Recently the Step-Team performed at Pierce’s Got Talent on March 9, 2016. The performance went good according to peers at the event. “The team did well but we can always improve some things,” Jayda said. Since this performance at Pierce’s Got Talent was the last performance of the Step Team for this school year all of the members were trying their hardest.

The 8th graders at Pierce will soon be saying goodbye to the team since they are going to High School soon. “We all will miss the Step-Team members since we have all become pretty close,” Jayda mentioned.

If you are interested in joining the Pi Psi Sigma team at Pierce next year, listen for the announcements for tryouts in the Fall.  Some advice Jayda has for potential members are: “Don’t be nervous; don’t worry about the moves too much; and have fun!”
